Zorinia Design was commissioned for a full interior design and procurement project for a substantial private villa in California. The client's brief called for a 'Contemporary Rural Elegance' – a design that would reinterpret the spirit of a traditional country house through a modern, luminous, and refined lens. Our approach focused on maximizing the generous volumes of the villa, allowing natural light to become a primary design element that gently structures and defines each space.

Our design philosophy for this California villa centered on creating open, inviting environments. We achieved this by carefully planning furniture layouts to ensure unobstructed flow and by selecting a palette that enhances the natural light. This included light-toned wide-plank oak flooring throughout the main living areas and walls painted in muted, earthy tones that reflect the Californian landscape. The aim was to foster a sense of tranquility and connection to the surrounding nature, a hallmark of both contemporary and Scandinavian design principles.

What defines Contemporary Rural Elegance in interior design?

Contemporary Rural Elegance blends the comfort and warmth of traditional rural aesthetics with the clean lines, open spaces, and minimalist sensibilities of contemporary design. It emphasizes natural materials like wood, stone, and linen, often left in their raw or lightly finished states to highlight their intrinsic beauty. The fireplace, a focal point, was clad in large-format, light-grey natural stone, offering texture and a grounded element without overpowering the room's airy feel. Recessed lighting and strategically placed floor lamps with linen shades provided layered illumination, adjustable to create various moods.

Selecting materials and finishes for a villa of this scale required meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to quality. We sourced large format porcelain tiles for the bathrooms, chosen for their durability and resemblance to natural stone, ensuring a seamless transition from the more rustic elements. Custom cabinetry in the kitchen featured rift-sawn white oak with integrated pulls, emphasizing the clean lines and minimalist aesthetic. Countertops were specified in a durable, light-colored quartz, providing both functionality and a sophisticated appearance. Every material choice supported the overarching theme of refined natural beauty.
